President Donald Trump announced a landmark trade agreement with Japan, securing a $550 billion investment to bolster U.S. industries. The deal, described as the largest foreign investment commitment ever, will create hundreds of thousands of American jobs and enhance domestic manufacturing.
Japan will purchase 100 Boeing aircraft and significantly increase its annual U.S. defense equipment purchases by billions, strengthening Indo-Pacific security and alliance interoperability. The U.S. retains 90% of the profits from Japan's investment, which aims to rebuild core American sectors like aerospace and manufacturing. Imports from Japan will face a reduced 15% tariff, down from 25%, following negotiations.
Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba emphasized the deal balances both nations' interests, achieved through advocacy for investment over higher tariffs. The White House called it a "strategic realignment" of U.S.-Japan economic ties, not just a trade deal. Trump, in a Truth Social post, hailed the agreement as a milestone in the enduring U.S.-Japan relationship, promising long-term American prosperity.
