Delta Air Lines canceled a transatlantic flight from Stockholm to New York after Swedish authorities arrested one of its pilots for suspected alcohol intoxication at Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). The incident occurred around 09:15 local time during a routine check, just before Delta Flight 205, bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), was set to depart with 198 passengers onboard.
The pilot, an American woman, failed a breathalyzer test mandated by European aviation safety regulations (EASA Regulation 2018/1042), which requires alcohol screening for pilots on flights to and from EU territory. The arrest halted the flight, triggering a legal inquiry and significant financial repercussions for Delta.
Under EU Regulation 261/2004, each passenger is entitled to €600 ($705 USD) in compensation, totaling over $139,000, plus additional costs for accommodations, meals, and rebooking.Delta responded swiftly, removing the pilot from duty and reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy for illegal substances. The airline issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to safety and compliance with EU and US regulations, pledging full cooperation with Swedish authorities.
The incident underscores the stringent safety measures in place to prevent cockpit impairment, a critical focus of global aviation standards. The cancellation disrupted travel plans for nearly 200 passengers, highlighting the operational and financial challenges airlines face when such incidents occur. Delta's immediate action and transparency aim to mitigate reputational damage while addressing the legal and regulatory fallout.
The case remains under investigation, with Swedish authorities handling the pilot's legal proceedings in accordance with local laws.
