Cathay Pacific expects delivery of its first GE Aerospace GE9X-powered Boeing 777 900 in 2027, with subsequent deliveries from a new order by 2034. The 777X program has faced repeated delays, pushing back service entry timelines.

The new 777 900, featuring updated cabin products, will replace Cathay's 35 Boeing 777 300ER currently in service, as part of its long-term fleet renewal. These aircraft will primarily serve long-haul routes while also supporting select regional destinations, enabling future growth and modernizing the airline's long-haul widebody fleet. This order marks Cathay's first Boeing commitment since December 2013, when it ordered 21 777 900. Since then, the Cathay Group, including its low-cost carrier HK Express, has focused on Airbus, ordering A320neo-family jets, A350, and A330neos.

The latest announcement coincided with Cathay's half-year financial results, reporting an operating profit of HK$5.9 billion ($752 million), down 1.5% year-on-year. Revenue grew 9.5% to HK$54.3 billion, but operating costs rose faster at 10.7% to HK$48.4 billion. Despite increased passenger volumes, yields declined due to market capacity recovery.

The 777 900 are expected to enhance efficiency and passenger experience, aligning with Cathay's strategy to modernize its fleet and strengthen its competitive position in long-haul markets. The airline continues to balance growth with cost management amid a challenging operating environment.
