The Bangladesh government has increased its Boeing aircraft order from 14 to 25, aiming to reduce the trade deficit with the United States and negotiate lower export tariffs proposed by the Trump administration. According to Bdnews24, this move could lead to the U.S. lifting the planned 35% tariff on Bangladeshi goods, set to begin August 1, 2025.
The purchase supports Biman Bangladesh Airlines' fleet modernization and expansion, with the national carrier planning to more than double its current 19-aircraft fleet—comprising Boeing 737s, 777s, 787 Dreamliners, and Dash 8-400 turboprops—over the next decade.Bangladesh Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman told reporters on July 27, 2025, that the order addresses immediate fleet needs and aligns with long-term goals. He noted that other nations, including India (100 aircraft) and Indonesia (50 aircraft), have placed similar orders.
Rahman emphasized Bangladesh's push for a tariff rate below India's proposed 26% and Vietnam's finalized 20%, arguing that a higher duty would disadvantage Bangladesh against competitors. Delivery timelines remain uncertain, with Rahman stating that Boeing prioritizes earlier orders and supplies based on capacity. However, Biman Bangladesh Airlines spokesperson Rowshan Kabir told The Business Standard that the airline was unaware of the order details.
The expanded order reflects Bangladesh's strategic effort to strengthen its aviation sector while navigating trade tensions with the U.S., with potential economic benefits hinging on successful tariff negotiations.
