Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, have severely disrupted air travel across the region. Airspace closures over Israel, Iraq, and Jordan have forced airlines like Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, and Wizz Air to cancel or reroute thousands of flights. Flightradar24 reports over 3,000 daily cancellations since last week. European carriers, already avoiding Russian airspace due to EU sanctions since 2022, face compounded challenges, with detours over Egypt and southern Saudi Arabia adding up to an hour to flights to Asia, increasing fuel costs and operational strain. The Israel-Gaza conflict, ongoing since late 2023, has led to repeated suspensions of flights to Tel Aviv, with airlines like Air France, Ryanair, KLM, and others halting services to Tel Aviv, Tehran, Amman, and Beirut, some until July or beyond. Carriers such as Finnair, previously reliant on trans-Siberian routes, have restructured networks, with some flights now extended by up to three hours. The latest restrictions have pushed airlines into narrow, congested corridors, further complicating long-haul routes to East Asia. The situation underscores the fragility of global aviation amid geopolitical unrest. Airlines face not only logistical hurdles but also financial pressures from longer routes and reduced connectivity. As tensions persist, the aviation industry braces for prolonged disruptions, with no clear resolution in sight. Affected airlines include Turkish Airlines, Aeroflot, Iberia Express, Transavia, airBaltic, Aegean Airlines, and others, highlighting the widespread impact on global travel networks.
