In the first half of 2025, Greece's tourism sector achieved a historic milestone as Athens International Airport (AIA) recorded over 15 million passengers, an all-time high for January to June. This 7.6% increase from 2024 underscores Greece's growing appeal as a top European destination, driven by robust domestic and international travel demand, expanded flight operations, and rising tourist spending.

AIA handled 15.07 million passengers, with international traffic surging 9.8% and domestic travel growing 2.2% year-on-year. June alone saw 3.45 million passengers, a 4.6% rise from June 2024, with international visitors up 5.8%. The airport also managed 127,992 flights, a 6.8% increase, with international flights jumping 10.7%, reflecting airlines' response to heightened demand.Tourism revenue also soared, with 4.12 million international visitors between January and April 2025 generating €2.16 billion, a 10.6% increase from 2024. Average per capita spending rose to €501.2 from €480.0, indicating tourists are engaging more with local businesses, opting for longer stays, or choosing premium experiences. 

This trend highlights Greece's success in attracting higher-spending and repeat visitors seeking cultural and leisure offerings.Athens, as Greece's primary gateway, is cementing its role as a key European aviation hub. AIA's efficient operations and growing international connectivity are fueling year-round tourism growth. The combination of record-breaking airport traffic, increased flight activity, and higher spending signals a strong recovery from past global disruptions and a growing preference for Greek destinations.Looking ahead, Greece is poised for continued success in 2025.
