Aeroflot, Russia's flag carrier, canceled numerous flights due to a suspected large-scale cyberattack. TASS, citing the Prosecutor General's Office, reported that hackers compromised several of Aeroflot's internal IT systems, prompting a criminal investigation.
Ukrainian and Belarusian hacker groups claimed responsibility, stating the breach followed months of infiltration. They allegedly accessed Aeroflot's reservations, CRM, and back-office systems, extracting significant data they vowed to share. The hackers also claimed to have obtained the unchanged personal password of Aeroflot's CEO since 2022. The cyberattack severely disrupted operations at Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), Aeroflot's primary hub, during a peak summer travel day.
Some reports suggest the attack also hindered the airline's aircraft refueling capabilities, exacerbating the chaos. As a result, Aeroflot advised affected passengers to return home, as it was unable to process rebookings or refunds immediately. The airline promised to offer solutions within 10 days.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyberattacks, with Aeroflot's systems crippled and passenger travel plans upended. The full extent of the data breach and its implications remain under investigation, as authorities work to address the fallout and secure the airline's operations.
