On July 6, Delta flight DL127, an Airbus A330-300, made an emergency descent over the Atlantic due to an engine issue during its journey from Madrid–Barajas Airport to New York JFK. Mid-flight, passengers reported a "whizzing" sound and a burning smell, prompting pilots to issue a Mayday call and shut down the right-hand engine (PW4168).

The flight diverted to Lajes Air Base on Terceira Island in the Azores, landing safely on runway 15 with one engine. Lajes, a Portuguese military and civilian airport, is a key mid-Atlantic diversion point with a long runway suitable for large aircraft.Passengers were delayed for hours at Lajes, which has limited customs facilities, until a replacement Delta A330 (N822NW) arrived the next morning to complete the journey.

The affected aircraft (N805NW) remains grounded in Terceira for engine inspection. Lajes Airport, also known as Aeroporto das Lajes, supports both civilian and military operations, including U.S. military activities under defense agreements, making it a critical hub for transatlantic emergencies.
